If you’re looking for a perfect weekend getaway, a weekend in Des Moines is a hidden gem that offers a mix of charm, vibrant activities, and delicious food. We spent a weekend in downtown Des Moines for the opening of the city’s famous Farmers Market, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Here’s a recap of my weekend and why I recommend it to anyone looking for a refreshing mini-vacation.
Friday Evening: A Taste of Downtown Des Moines
We arrived in Des Moines on Friday and checked into our cozy Airbnb located on the 8th floor of a downtown condo. The views from this height were breathtaking—watching the city lights sparkle from above was a magical way to start the trip. Plus, the location was across the street from Fong’s Pizza, a local favorite, and just a short walk from the Farmers Market.
To start, we ate dinner at Fong’s Pizza. Fong’s Pizza is a must-visit spot in downtown Des Moines, known for its creative fusion of Asian flavors with classic pizza. This eclectic pizzeria is housed in a quirky, retro tiki-bar-inspired space, complete with vintage décor and a fun, laid-back vibe. Their menu features unique creations like the Crab Rangoon Pizza and the iconic Peanut Butter Honey Thai Sticks, which deliver a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. Whether you’re looking for a full meal or a casual snack with friends, Fong’s offers a dining experience as unforgettable as their inventive dishes. In my opinion, they do not serve the greatest food, but it is definitely something to try at least once.
After dinner, we took a leisurely walk along the river to enjoy the city’s stunning sculptures and skyline views.
Saturday: Farmers Market and Local Finds
Saturday morning started with a short walk to the famous Des Moines Farmers Market. The Des Moines Farmers Market is a vibrant hub of activity and one of the largest open-air markets in the country, stretching across multiple downtown blocks. Boasting over 300 vendors, the market offers a diverse mix of fresh produce, handmade crafts, artisanal foods, and unique goods. You’ll find everything from colorful flowers and organic vegetables to gourmet cheeses, homemade baked goods, and locally crafted jewelry.
Live music fills the air as talented street performers entertain the bustling crowds, adding to the lively atmosphere. Food lovers can sample everything from freshly brewed coffee and breakfast burritos to mouthwatering pastries and globally inspired treats. For dog lovers, the market doubles as a hotspot for adorable pup-watching, as many locals bring their furry friends along for the stroll.
With its energetic vibe and endless variety, the Des Moines Farmers Market is a must-visit for anyone seeking a true taste of local culture and community.
After the Farmers Market, we strolled over to Buzzard Billy’s, another fantastic spot within walking distance. Buzzard Billy’s is a lively, laid-back restaurant in Des Moines known for its bold Cajun and Creole-inspired cuisine. With a menu packed full of southern comfort food, it’s the perfect spot for a hearty meal after a day of exploring the city. Their specialties include classics like Jambalaya, Crawfish Étouffée, and Blackened Catfish, as well as a variety of po’ boys and indulgent appetizers like Fried Gator Tail. The relaxed atmosphere, combined with friendly service and flavorful dishes, makes Buzzard Billy’s a must-visit for anyone craving a taste of New Orleans in the heart of Iowa.
That evening, we ventured to The Cheesecake Factory for dinner, indulging in a decadent meal before browsing the nearby mall. The Cheesecake Factory in Des Moines offers an upscale yet approachable dining experience with an extensive menu that caters to every craving. Known for its signature cheesecakes, the restaurant also boasts a wide variety of dishes, from hearty pasta and fresh salads to gourmet burgers and global-inspired entrees like Chicken Madeira and Thai Coconut Lime Chicken. The warm, inviting atmosphere and generous portions make it an ideal spot for a special dinner or a casual night out. Of course, no visit is complete without indulging in one of their famous cheesecakes, with flavors ranging from classic New York Style to decadent Oreo Dream Extreme.
A little shopping and people-watching rounded out the night beautifully.
Sunday: A Stay Worth Repeating
On Sunday morning, it was time to head home, but the weekend left us with unforgettable memories. The 8th-floor condo provided amazing views that made our stay even more special. Staying downtown made it easy to explore everything on foot, from the Farmers Market to the riverfront sculptures and the city’s stunning architecture. I highly recommend replicating this exact itinerary for anyone planning a weekend in Des Moines, especially during Farmers Market season!
